Internet speed over Laptop

Hi,

I face some problem while accessing internet from my laptop. I am having broadband connection with 56kbps. I can able to access any website. But its very very slow. Download is at the rate of 4 or even below 2 kbps. But at the same time i have connected another machine (desktop) paralelly with the same connection which has the speed of more than 30kbps irrespective of the cable (one is connected thru' N/W cable & another one is thru' USB with external modem)

Is that due to sharing bw two machines? or anything need to be changed on Laptop?

I have given the specs.

Laptop: Compaq Presasrio - AMD 2.2GHZ, 120GB HDD, 1 GB RAM

If you have a dialup modem - 56kbps (kilobits per second) - your max download speed will be 7Kbps (kilobytes per second).

8 bits in a byte, so: 56 / 8 = 7

Probably shouldn't admit this, but I have always wondered about that.
It never occurred to me that it was kilobits per second.

You are a clever sausage, pgo.

Technically, you're supposed to write Kbps (bits) and KBps (bytes) but no one ever does.
