Why not experience the best of both worlds? (Monetry worries aside.)

So you can be a condescending prick, but when I reply somehow you're shocked. Funny that.

Theres an apple shop in birmingham so im going to have a pop in later this week and maybe consider a mac as a few people have suggested them but im not going to rush into a decision yet as its a lot of money to spend so want one thats right for me
macs are more expensive tho
i rang up and got a quote and was quoted over £2000 for a macbook pro but that was the 17" 2.4Ghz one with faster hard drive + insurance + office 2004 + Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium Academic

dont know how the academic version will limit me when i finish uni - will i have to pay extra?

Apple are greedy, but the extra lifespan of the Mac makes the costs comparable to WinBoxes for the average user. If you're particularly tech-savvy then a PC makes sense cost-wise, bear in mind you'd then (technically) miss out on OS X though, which IMO is currently the best OS out there. Decisons, decisons.

Yep, but many. many people don't, it's unlikely to ever crop up. The rumour is that if you're making a lot of freelance money and get found out you have to buy a full upgrade license.

The Academic version won't limit you at all except for the fact that when you graduate, you'll have to pay for full price upgrades like everyone else. You can keep using it and Adobe won't chase you. I asked Adobe this directly, because I do some teaching at a local university and qualified for the academic version as well.

I was a home Windows user for about 13 years until I got a Mac about 6 months ago. I stuck Windows on it under Boot Camp, just as a security blanket so I could dual boot. I think I've used Windows about 3 times since then. There's just no need for it any more. I used to loathe Macs from my time in a design studio in the 90s where our Macs were so unreliable, I practically had to save after every single mouse click to avoid losing my work to one of the 30 crashes I'd get every day. But these days they're about as rock solid, and beautifully engineered as it gets.

Edit: BTW: I'm sure you know, but just in case, don't forget that Apple also do an educational discount on their hardware.

Compaq is a great laptop that i have used for years but you can also consider buying external hardrive wich will help you keep folders outside of the laptop. Works for me

im going to look in an apple shop in birmingham later this week so will look around then, the quote i got was good considering how much the software costs
even though its expensive now and the mac is expensive the price for what you get looks good (but dont know if i wanted to spend that much)

A few people out my lecture are just getting laptops worth £500-600, which was what i was going to get but by the time i finish uni they will be out of date and the spec i dont feel will handle the software as good (less than 2ghz, 1GB ram, not as good graphics etc)

this is the quote they emailed me: (upgraded to 2.4Ghz & faster hard drive)

MacBook Pro, 17-inch, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Custom £ 1417.00
-MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Widescreen Display
-2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,
-Backlit Keyboard & Mac OS
-Country kit
-160GB Serial ATA drive (7200rpm)
-SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD RW/CD-RW)
-2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student &Teacher Edition - £ 80.81
Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium Academic - £ 208.47
EMEA CC-HE contract uplift PowerBook/MacBook - £ 50.00

The Total Price ex VAT is £ 1756.28
The Total Price inc VAT is £ 2063.63

At the risk of confusing you further, there's definitely nothing wrong with getting a sub-£1000 Windows laptop and it should handle CS3 pretty sweetly. The power-to-price ratio has rarely been better. When I got my Mac Pro it was because money wasn't an issue and it was being bought for me, so I went for my dream machine just because I could. If you were in that position, I'd probably recommend the same.

But having said that if I was paying for it myself (especially if I was a student), there's just no way I could have shelled out the cost of my Mac, and I can't honestly say that I'm certain I would have got a Mac. Right now though, if portability isn't a big issue, I think the new 24" iMac would be my most likely choice.

You might want to look at the XPS M1330. I've just bought one and it's great.
