Anyone here ever bought from (a friend/accomplice in) the States with a view to making big savings on Apple gear? I'm considering getting a friend over there to pick up an ipod for me and sending it across. How viable is it to do that? Anything I need to know/be aware of? |

Gray, what do you mean by 'plugs'? Earphones or the earphone sockets? I probably won't be using the Apple earphones anyway. I can't stand in-ear headphones (comfort and performance) and I already have a good pair that I'd rather use. + I don't particularly want to advertise to any unsavoury sorts that I'm carrying an ipod around. Mik, do you know if the Japanese models are the same 'plugs' as the US models or the European models? Also, what exactly is the score regarding gifts? As long as it's a single item (i.e. unlikely to be for further retail), do customs really have a leg to stand on? |

Bill, the JP plugs are the same as US plug. Thing to do is get your friend to open the box and stick some tunes on the ipod, run the battery down a bit and voila - they really haven't got a leg to stand on then. hopefully |

Gray, that's no probs. Travel adaptors are cheap as chips. - Mik, sounds like the right tack. I'll sound them out about it this weekend (friends, not C&E). Knowing my luck, they'd end up trying to do me for trafficking pirated moozik or summink. - Would I be Mr Right in thinking that the States will be the cheapest place to pick up an iPod? Would I also be right in assuming that Apple will be the cheapest place to pick them up Stateside? TIA again |

It's prpbably a lot cheaper to sort it out via the US. Current exchange rate is 1.8 dollars to the pound, meaning a base 17" powerboook over there is £1,634.65 ($2999.00) as opposed to £2399.00 ($4000 odd). For that saving, I would jump on a quick return flight to Chicago, and visit the store on the Magnificent Mile! |
