are macs that great? seriously
I know this will turn into a mac vs pc thread... but I've been useing a pc my whole life and never touched a mac. I'm looking to buy a new computer and thought about myabe purchasing a mac. I know its not the super pill that suddenly makes my shit turn into chocolate, but almost everyone I've talked to that owns a mac loves it. I'm a web designer, I usually write my own code and only use DW to make a table or 2 (I honestly don't know how to make a decent table by hand... I started web design with CSS never learned a decent table technique) most of the software I use is open source. I'm not that "attached" to microsoft, even have an older pc running linux. I like linux but it a bit frustrating most of the time. So I've heard that ease of use is a big draw for buying a mac. is that it? is there anything else? I'm asking honestly here... I want to here from some people who use both PC and MAC |

I used a PC for basically forever and then switched to a Mac for my home use this past year. I've had no problem finding software for it, in fact there's more quality software that I've liked on the Mac than the PC in my opinion. No real games, but then again I've seen a boost in my productivity.... It's elegant and easy to use, it's actually fun even. I don't worry about accidentally downloading spyware and I don't even need an AV. The drawbacks other than the lack of games is the lack of hardware support, don't expect to really upgrade your graphics card or even find a working bluetooth dongle (they're usually built in now though). Also, because my job consists of me fixing PCs and working on Windows networks I generally know what my PC is doing and thinking. With the Mac I have no idea and I'm afraid that if it crashes I might actually need it to get repaired and I'll get charged the extortional rates that I usually charge my clients. But then again Macs generally don't crash. |

I use both, daily. In my opinion OSX is better than XP (vista set to level that arguement?) For me the only reason we used Macs was for workflow compatibility - with the onset of PDFX and the digital workstream, being able to set up a doc on either and have the printer accept it has made the whole discussion mute from a design perspective... ... but then Macs look better, and the range of software installed is great - but more expensive.... ...and PC's can perform just as quick - they're cheaper to build, and have a wider varity of software in both opensource and off-the-shelf... |

I started out just like you. Never learned a single table-layout, can't do one if I tried and am convinced it would be too hard and stupid anyway. I have been using PC for my entire career also. I have designed a couple sites on a mac (loved it) and I feel that I'm just as productive on either. I think I just enjoy designing more on a mac. It just feels good. It's so smooth. Plus, with the new ones, you can just "alt-tab" to windows or dual-boot. What Windows environment can offer both of these worlds? |

Ha. Me and my two Macs are still in the honeymoon period (3 months). But I can't help but feel that I have wasted so many hours trying to get my PC to do such trivial things, and switching to Mac has been such a breath of fresh air. I actually enjoy computers these days. |

I use a Mac at school and a PC at home and honestly I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses obviously. I do believe that macs aren't really that great. I've encountered many times of applications crashing on macs more so than on my pc. Then again that's comparing a lab computer to my computer that I take good care of. Either way they're both still computers and neither one is really that great. There's always faults to be found. |
