If you can up your budget a little more, go for a Firewire WD combo drive.

Cheers Stick.... Cheaper but Delivery sticks a few bob on and I only save about a fiver, PC world I can stroll in and by it for £95.

One question, Firewire or USB 2, always though FW was quicker

Yeah I saw that one, for an extra £15 I would rather have one that I wouldn't want to place a box over and doesn't look like a Scutter from Red Dwarf!

As far as I know Firewire is faster, but then my USB2 drive is shit and takes up valuable port space (for my USB coffee warmer & phone charger!).
Firewire just seems to make more sense.

Firewire and USB2 are about the same I think.

re: external drives - I've bought loads of the feckers and they're all much of a muchness to be honest. No particular brand has every jumped out at me as being better/ worse.

One of these is next on my list:
http://www.freecom.com/ecProduct_detail.asp?ID=2347

An external drive that can be accessed via the web - so whereever I am in the world (usually about 10 miles away!) I can access the files on there... obviously bandwidth restricted. I can do this now as I have a negear router and a VPN tunnel - but I dont' like leaving the PC on all day - far too wasteful...

... erm... have I bored you all enough yet...

...erm... hello?

I'm considering the MyBook - I'd be in my element with a 320GB disk drive on my desk. I only have 180GB across 4 computers atm.

I'd really like one that was USB & Firewire so I could use the spare FW on my Mac and the USB on my laptop. Does such a thing exist, and can they be run simultaneously?

I don't think you can plug them both in at once. Plus - if sharing between a mac and PC you'd need to make sure it's formatted as fat32 - mac won't deal with ntfs AFAIK.

downsides of fat32? no files bigger than 3GB I think...

Yeah. Further reading suggests that I can keep the drive plugged into both, as long as it isn't active on each.

The FAT32 issue isn't so much of a problem, although I would create a 40GB partition to back up my OSX installation. But I don't do any video editing or anything, 3GB isn't going to be an issue.
