did'nt dell buy alienware? probably very similar - both overpriced. Do a little bit of research and make youre own, you'll get more bang for your buck.

I would say IBM or, as I'm bias - a top of the range Acer (their high end gear doesn't suffer the same questionable build quality as the budget stuff). I'm dubious about Dell after we had a couple of their desktops which were quite frankly shite.

I'm an Alienware user, so I'd reccomend it. But the Dell XPS vs Alienware range is long running thing about which is best, as far as i could gather it depends what you do because they both have their qualities. Both of them really are for if you want sheer power, otherwise as said above, it probably cheaper to build your own.
Just then you can't say 'I own an alienware' heh.

I'm on a Area 51M 7700--- laptop, though if I buy again I'd get a desktop next time, I just needed it for its portability.

don't buy either. Go to http://www.overclockers.co.uk and make your own. it's really easy, and you get way better value for your money.

p.s get a intel core 2 duo processor. they are the shit.

What's the point of buying a laptop that's barely portable?

Those XPS things are not only ugly as sin, but heavy as hell, too. If you want a system to play games, build a desktop. It'll be cheaper and better than anything you can buy from Dell.

According to most of the reviews of the MacBook Pro, it's performance with Windows ranks up there with the best so even if you only need windows, it could well be worth considering and then you've got the OS X option should you ever need it.

For web design and mobility, you won't need to spend $3500. That's insane. Look in the neighborhood of $1200-2000. Plus these Alienware and Dell things suck so much juice that you can't expect to leave them on battery power for any serious amount of time - which reduces mobility as much as their insane weight and size. What are they like 10-12 pounds or so?

If you're out for gaming, buy a desktop because you'll get better performance for half the price. And with the money you didn't spend on the top of the line giant laptop, you can buy a cheap laptop for mobility and web design.

For $3500 you can buy a desktop for gaming and a laptop for mobility. Why waste so much money on a single computer?

What? You're going to spend over 3 grand on a laptop so you can have about 8 windows, including photoshop open? I've got a 700 quid 1.5Ghz apple laptop. Currently I have open -

Photoshop, Camino, Mail, iTerm, SQLite DB Browser, MSN Messenger, NewsFire, Textmate, MacIrssi plus running in the background I have Apache and Apache 2, SVN Server. You don't need to spend 3000+ on a laptop to have photoshop plus 7 other windows open. But hey, do what you want to. Your money at the end of the day.

I'd get the Alienware - you get a free tshirt with that one

bollocks to all that... if all you honestly want to do is run photoshop and textpad/dreamweaver - go to www.ebuyer.com and get something for £500 - or whatever the american equivalent of ebuyer is.

Then you can spend the rest of the money on useful stuff. Like the software, or a Wacom.
