I'm a part time web designer at the moment and will be doing a degree in web design beginning september. I need to buy a new laptop, but without breaking the bank, but i also do no want to compromise the performance aspect. I'm contemplating getting a Inspirion 6400 for £550. What do you think? Thanks. |

Sony Viao 17" widescreen going on ebay for £500 at the moment. If you're planning to design on it the larger the screen the better. Freelance Brighton | Design Agency Brighton | Twitter | Linkedin | Plurk

The Dells are decent. Have a look at Lenovo, though. It's a Chinese company that has taken over the production of IBM's excellent ThinkPad line. Subcircle's right about screen size. A MacBook is another possibility (they have a nice screen and a phenomenal keyboard), but I'd be wary as I've been hearing a lot of people complain about them - overheating, stained cases, warping, faulty hardware, etc. A lot of people seem to think that buying a first generation Apple product is a bad idea and, as cam pointed out in another thread, the next generation of Core Duo processors is due out this month - you might consider waiting til August and seeing if the Core Duo 2 is affordable. |

Is it really important for a great graphics card? I'm not using it for games and really the most graphic intensive programmes I'd be using would be Flash or Photoshop. Do you reckon I could get away with using integrated graphics? Or should i opt for a decent graphics card? The system which i really have my eye on at the moment is the Inspirion 6400. Until Wednesday it comes with 1024mb ram and 80GB HDD. Would you recommend getting the Core Duo chip for the extra price? I have heard mixed opinions about the macbooks but i don't personally think they are for me, i have no real experience of macs and don't have the time to adapt to it right now. Thanks |
