I'm thinking about getting one of these:

Belkin Universal UPS 1200VA with USB & Serial Interface

Never used one but would still recommend getting one.

At home I use my laptop so if the power goes out the battery takes over. At work if the power goes out we switch to generator in less than a second, (still slow enough to lose whatever you were working on but).

Simple, unobtrusive, does it's job and doesn't take up much space. Won't let you work for long without power, but will stop you losing your work to a glitch.
