dhtml is making a big comeback, thanks to improved dom support, 'ajax', and lots of publicity

also, people are moving away from inline calls such as 'onfocus' and moving to external js with event handlers - much neater way to do things

as for inman's site - it's nice (like the use of the whitespace) but hardly revolutionary

I wouldn't call it revolutionary either, I just thought it was wonderful. Never quite seen navigation like that before...maybe on a Flash site.

I think the whole thing is spectacularly laid out.

A lot of people on showcase sites complained that the text is too small and grey...and I tend to agree, but it's a minor caveat.

It's definitely not tailored to your "average user" - hell, I had a hard time finding the navigation!

the whole narrow 2-column thing is unbelievably tired

Very clean, and fast. The technique might not be something new, but the way he use it is very neat.
I think he saved himself with putting it both on top and at the bottom tho'.

Very nice, I thought this;

Ha ha, me too.

It's not revolutionary, but I like it.

Indeed - plus it's only in the code once. Very handy.

Wish he'd sort out the jerky animation though, it's not too hard to get it smooth... It's the same on that more one he did. Bit shit really, makes it feel like it's 'heavy'.

I agree.

I tried something similar ages ago (moved in from the side not the top) and it was really nice as a small tab, but fullscreen began to judder.

So how much does the user's system affect the speed and smoothness of the movement - seeing as javascript runs locally?
Or is it normally down to the scripting?

Down to the scripting in my experience...

http://gsgd.co.uk/sandbox/scrollout.php - click the link at the top and you should get a smooth scrollout. (seem to be having problems with his stylesheets so if it looks funky and you can't see the link it's in the same place as on his site).

For me it just shows it at the bottom of the page and when I find the link and click it it jumps to the bottom of the page...i.e. - broken.
