I'm just starting my dissertation based on the same topic, some other sources to look at
'Society of the Spectacle' by Guy Debord
'Looking closer four' Critical writings on graphic design by Steven Heller
www.nothingness.org
also Richard Hamiltons 'Just what makes today's homes so different, so appealing'
Hope this helps! good luck

Hey everyone,

my 1st post here.

I've been thinking a lot about this and sadly I think the answer is no. I used to believe that graphic design can directly make the world a better place. But then I realized to do so, you have to directly address the problem, i.e. be a nurse or aid worker etc. Graphic design can move people and change the way they think, but unless it translates into action then sadly no.

On a broader scale I think graphic design can either make the world a better or worse place depending on how it is used. Sadly a lot of graphic design is for commercial purposes which drive consumerism and capitalism and unnecessary materialistic desires.

Just to help me retain my sanity, I do volunteer graphic design work at a charity. It makes me feel good, but I realize to a large extent my work pales in comparison to all the social workers at the charity who are dealing directly with the people in need.

Oh and an interesting link I found:

BTW great forum guys!
