Hey everyone, my 1st post here. I've been thinking a lot about this and sadly I think the answer is no. I used to believe that graphic design can directly make the world a better place. But then I realized to do so, you have to directly address the problem, i.e. be a nurse or aid worker etc. Graphic design can move people and change the way they think, but unless it translates into action then sadly no. On a broader scale I think graphic design can either make the world a better or worse place depending on how it is used. Sadly a lot of graphic design is for commercial purposes which drive consumerism and capitalism and unnecessary materialistic desires. Just to help me retain my sanity, I do volunteer graphic design work at a charity. It makes me feel good, but I realize to a large extent my work pales in comparison to all the social workers at the charity who are dealing directly with the people in need. Oh and an interesting link I found: http://www.pingmag.jp/2006/06/23/jon...ies-in-design/ BTW great forum guys! |
