Graphic and Communication Design at Leeds University is one of my considerations, however having been accepted to Bath Spa and Bristol also I am a little confused. It appears that, of my favourites: 1.University of Leeds-is an academic and ideas orientated course, including a year in industry/abroad 2.Bath Spa University College-An arts College with possible pathways in Illustration I love the idea of being on the Leeds campus, hoping to get involved with the student radio, newspaper, bars. And as for the course, being very ideas based gives it an academic underpinning-this appeals to me as I enjoy writing. However, I am passionate about illustration and generally hope to develop my colour/composition/photoshop skills, and am concerned that I might miss out on these skills at the University of Leeds. Is the elective option the only major escape from ideas based Graphic Design at the University? can you choose illustration on it? Do tutors actively help develop the merit of visual aspects of Graphic Design here? ANY ADVICE MUCH APPRECIATED |

Don't know much about Leeds but my advice is to choose one that has an industry option - you generally won't get looked at if you don't have experience no matter what grades or uni you've been to. You'll also learn alot from the people on your course and around you so try and pick somewhere you'll take inspiration from and are comfortable with. In terms of illustration/photoshop skills etc. I've generally found that once you've got the basics you can pick the rest up as you go along, and if you don't like the uni you pick, build up a decent portfolio in the first year and use your credits to transfer in the second. |

work experience does sound like a huge pro to the Leeds university course. I really am fascinated by contemporary Graphic Design's often high aesthetic, especially colour and composition (loving avante garde fashion magazines design). And I'm a keen illustrator ...so still unsure if this is going to be supressed on such an academic and idea based course. Last edited by keirsy : 21-05-2005 at 08:20. |

I went up to Leeds Met on Friday, went to the degree show. Was there for about 2 and a half hours, some great work, brilliant stuff. Picked up a load of freebies, couple of zines, cards, straws. Really well laid out too. Used up 2 disposable cameras in the end. Were you there? |

No I've been having some family problems so couldn't get there, I hope you noticed the floor its the bit I had to paint I was there last week when they started getting the light boxes up as you come out of the lifts and when work was going up, I was meant to go in for a talk on the other work. Did you get a copy of the publication? Did you get to talk to any tutors or students? Alice would of been there, shes the head of the course. |

Ah, i loved those light boxes. Was the publication called spineless? if so, i did and i really enjoyed it. Best zine-type publication i've read really, had some itneresting content, as well as great visual stuff. I saw a mad-looking woman as i came out the lift, but i didnt see her again, was that alice? There was a middle-aged bloke dressing to look 23, thought he had to be a tutor but when i tried to catch his attention he smiled aimlessly and walked off. Must've scared him. Which was your work? Also, what was that Milkie thing? Looked good. I got followed by a security guard on the way in. Well suspicious he was, asked me where i was going. |

lol! No I've not finished yet, got another year but I couldn't make the show launch so I was quite gutted! Alice has long blonde hair and has an irish accent, not sure about the tutor who was dressed younger, most of them have quite eclectic dress sense Yeah the publication is called Spineless, not seen a copy yet but I'm in over the holidays and may take a look at any copies around. |

I went to Cumbria College of Art and Design. I have mixed views really? e.g if you went to a good college before hand that got you into using computers and graphic packages..then the first year at Cumbria is A) a waste of money B) a waste of time. It's was quite frustrating and felt like you had to go back to basic's and stamp with potatoes, but in the 2nd and 3rd year it picked up abit. Because Cumbria is a college that's specialised in just doing arts. It covers everything not just Advertising, Editorial, packaging etc but moving image, using editing suites for tv graphics, marketing, professional development - how to get work after Uni or work for yourself. I mean back then I spoke to alot of my friends that went to other Uni's that were doing Graphic Design and they weren't covering as much as I was? But things change and courses are changing all the time? I went back to my first college that I went to after school a few years ago and the kid's there were doing websites and all sorts while I was just getting to grips with it. I was looking scared :p. I suppose the bad sides to Cumbria was the lack of nightlife and I dunno about anyone else but looking for a lecturer for advice and not being able to find any because they'd decided to take the day off? We also got to meet tomato, Jarvis White, Attik and lots more...but also like someone else said..nothing wrong with staying home and studying nearby...saving tons of money in the process. If you got the moolah go for it! |
