cms = content management system
it is a system which makes it easier to post stuff and do changes on your site, so you dont have to mess around with the code...

I use Joomla or ModX cms for clients at work they are pretty good.

wordpress is another raved about cms. Very easy to manage / set up and monitor. However, a CMS like joomla may give a more professional feel.

That being said, a site like smashingmagazine use wordpress.

Have a play and go to opensourcecms dot com to have a play with a couple CMS programs (and they're free too!)

Wordpress is quite ingenious to use for small projects. Many plugins available for this system as well .
