I'm at this point in Illustrator:

I think I need to use a clipping mask but, I think there is somethign else I have to do. This is what happens:

I need to get rid of all the text on the otusid eof the basketball shape. After I figure that out I'll need to colorize each section appropriately like in the original picture. Can anyone help?

If i'm thinking right. I'm pretty sure that the text will always be there. It's a mask. It's always there so you can release it and have you original text back. Either that or break apart your text and delete the bits you don't need.

Just make the clipping mask then go back and edit the color on the letters. You're on the right path as far as I know.

Well, This is what I did when trying it out and it works perfectly.

First create your text box.
Now duplicate the text box for each segment of the ball. (8 in total) ctrl-f
Now create 7 new layers and move one text box to each layer.
Next change the text color to the desired color for each layer.
Now create one segment of the ball on each layer.
*It is best to lock all layers that are not being worked on till it is that layers turn.
Once you have finished creating you paths with the pen tool, start moving through your layers, unlocking the layers you are working with and locking them up when you move to the next one. Make you clipping paths and voila!

Hope that helped

why not just use pathfinder?... right-click on your text and "create outlines", then move your ball shape over the text, go to your pathfinder box go to shape modes and press "intersect shape areas", after this go to "Object" in your top horizontal menu and press "flatten transparency".. that should do the trick... (remember to "ungroup" if you have problems selecting the letters, when wanting to change colours)

Pathfinder would be a bad way to do this as you're bound to be given copy revisions once the artwork is complete... leave text as text if it's possible (which it is here).
