Can't look much further than than Illustrator/InDesign for all design work. I only use Photoshop to prepare photography to import into Illustrator/InDesign or to prepare images for the web. I tend to avoid it for everything else.

Gimp and Inkscape, with Scribus for page composition.

How cool - open source fans!

How do you like the software? Any major flaws?

On a different note - what about programming...does anyone use Vim? Despite the learning curve, it's starting to seem like a very good option.

if you're serious about getting print ready documents out to clients/printers you've got to be looking at creative suite. illustrator's and indesign's can import PDF settings which as saved me loads of time and earned me loads of money.

The problem with using all open source stuff is that if you try to look for a full time job, they will (99.99% of the time) want proficiency in the programs in the Creative Suite that apply to the job. It is very hard to find a company that uses open source internally.

I use GIMP and Inkscape (vector illustrator) because they are both free, easy to use, do all what I want and work on my linux box

Ahhh I just let the client to do their own design, it saves me the time and effort and I'm quids in - everyone's a winner.

Oooh but try telling them the difference between bitmap and vector and it's the off side rule all over again.

CS innit?, I've not met a printer that doesn't use it - yet, so should any slight problems arise they usually sort it out much quicker than other progs.

i used to freehand back in the good old days before adobe took over. one thing i liked about freehand over illustrator was how you could have multiple pages open at once in freehand, illustrator can't do that - or i don't know how to do it in illustrator.
