I've got an Intuos 2, (home), and an Intuos 3, (work) and swear by both of 'em. No idea if the bamboo is any good but if you're limited by budget it should be a good place to start and see if you even like using one. As with most things, buy as much quality as you can afford.

what is your job?
are you a full time illustrator? or what?
I do web and some print design, but I don't illustrate (except for fun) so the bamboo is fine for me. Get an Intuos or (if you have the money ad think you are worth it) a Cintiq.

AFAIK Graphire is more or less the same as Bamboo except it's wireless (bluetooth).

Personally I'd save up and get an Intuos 3. It's worth it if you're going to use it a lot. Plus, as I seem to have said in at least half a dozen threads now, you get pen tilt support in Intuos which Bamboo and Graphire don't have.

Check out my post a few threads down. I'm wondering the same thing and we cleared it thoroughly.

I like the Wacom software very much. If you use them right, there are some cool fx (not so cheap looking as most Photoshop filters)

The stuff that came on the Graphire disc.
I did some watercolor book illustrations with the software and it worked out very well.
