Colour Simplification

Is there an easy way to simplify the number of colours in a sample is Photoshop CS3? It would be similar to reduced the bits in a gif. For example, turning a photograph that has millions of colours into one with six or seven different colours. Obviously you loss a whole load of quality, but I plan to use it to turn photographs into more cartoon-like figures. I think you can do it with contrast etc. but is there any automated way?

posterize?

but tracing in illustrator is the only way you'll end up with something of some quality.

their could be a 3rd party filter somewhere that does something near similar. but it will no doubt be a variant on posterize.

if you have a reference for what you are after post it up. much easier than guessing!

what about doing a save for web and devices...go to one of the gif settings in the preset box at the right, under colors you can change from 2 to 256 colors...

if you need to take that further - I would open the result in illustrator and do a "live paint" filter on it to make it a vector graphic.

does that help?
