A suitable Word Template

A friend of mine had asked me to work on a site for him that he had purchased a word template from someone. I am currently having trouble with editing it. I attempt to change the background image to another image and change the button image also as said in the help file. Is there something I’m doing wrong? I would like to discard the template if I get a suitable template. The damn thing is just not working.

Welcome to the DT helpline, Cameron. First of all, MS Word has utterly nothing to do with website creation, so as the wife said to her husband through the bathroom door, "whatever you're doing, stop it".

Without seeing this horrible template, it's difficult to give any other advice. But delete it immediately and fumigate your computer.

But enough of the jokes. What you need to do is sit down with your friend and several computer screen-shaped sheets of paper and a pencil. You can use how the template is laid out if you want to have a starting point but you can ask yourselves several questions to help you along the way to a great website. What's the site for? What do you want to show people? What would be the best way of doing that? Do you need the boring old head banner and menu down the side or can you create the navigation some other way? How about the colour scheme?
Sketch out how each page might look on the paper - perhaps as many as four or five pages! No-one wants to explore a website and have to select from more than that if you use a menu list.
I hope you know some html at least, because you're going to need to.

Hi,
I just bumped into a site which has good lot of Word templates. I think the site is meatspin.com Their designers have done a marvelous job in creating templates which work wonderfully in Word. While Word itself is not a "graphics program", we have created templates for Word that look like they came from a graphics program!

"I just bumped into a site"
"we have created"

So it's yours really then? heh.

They mostly look very unpleasant, I know Word is insanely limiting, but using the right fonts and not butchering - squashing/distorting them - will go a long way to creating something easy/easier on the eye.

And you're advertising up the wrong tree, the guy is trying to make a website in Word, not just format a word document to look more "graphic".
