Just play nicely Klumm, I have ventured further than Watford before.

Cocknose, fair enough if that is your cup of tea. I was just trying to point out some of the pitfalls I have made, so they wouldn't.

I think this could be a hilarious thread...

here you go.. show and tell!

A 52 pg Lifestyles mag produce from scratch in under a week with NO budget.

it is what it is... a bob standard lifestyles mag produced by one designer for a newspaper.

and no more than 30 mins - ish on each pg

excuse the shitty-ness of the camera i had to sell my good one to buy my macbook pro. This one is 4 yrs old!!

Sweet, nice and clean. But my original point is that you have experience with layout in time constraints and can handle it accordingly, so 30 mins when the style is set with CONFIDENCE is sweet.

When it is not the norm, and the client sends you crap, and wants to revise shit loads of times, it could take a lot longer. I don't know where the animosity came from here, I was only trying to help other realise the problems I have had in the past, so they don't make the same mistakes.

No worries, it didn't really bother me. I just know the difference between working with other designers and working with a client that always wants the copy bigger as they are paying you the wedge, and have to get involved to fuck things up.

p.s. You have shit loads of widows in your copy...

yeah i know... thats the one problem with copyeditors that use indesign. they change text... and sometimes i will not do the pre-press!! like the big bastard one on the front cover!!! i know... THAT IS THE PROBLEM when you have a tiny deadline. i always get things back and see mistakes made after the design!!!

Ah.. well!! I'm always the last person to see the match proofs too. for some reason advertorial see them first!

i have a whole load of problems that there is no point getting into..

That is my original point. Anyone wanting to do a big job should be aware of the pitfalls, design and repro, and even when you know the pitfalls, hiccups can slip in.

Funnily enough I am just updating the layout I mentioned earlier. It is for Guide Dogs International, so hopefully if there are any mistakes they won't be seen by the dogs.

It looks pretty damn good to me. Cocknose is back, yay! - where ya been, y'ole bugger?
Mr Kurm is right about the Northern types not bothering with unnecessary decorum and false politeness. Not that we go out of our way to be rude, that's a different matter.

False politeness?? Telling someone:

'fuck you - go fuck yourself - die of hemorroids' is a little more than false politeness when directed at someonme you don't know.

IMO it is juvenile angst, that would quickly be lost from anyones vocabulary if it were shouted around places like Feltham, Hackney, Walthamstow, Bow, Harringey etc etc.

It aint just the Northerners that are brash and are a bit rough, it's just some shout louder than the rest...

...can't believe I just wasted more time.

By the way, the original poster is a "her" not a "him".

Thanks for all the insightful information on magazine layout. I landed the contract and look forward to seeing how long I actually do spend on each page!
