logo critique

Howdy chaps and chapesses,

A mate of mine has just come up with a logo, and was after a second opinion, and I told him you lot were really good at tearing shit to shreds, so I've posted it here.

Feel free to be as abusive as you like (i'm thinking 2DFruit(cake)).

Ta muchly.

That's not a logo, that's Photoshop.

the drippy bit doesnt work, its too subtle and looks like a mistake. too much bevel/gradient/drop shadow - get rid of at least 2 of them. simplify.

Hello folks... This is my logo here - Somehow I have managed to not have an account here in the past 5 years, even though I've been in the business for easily that long!

Thanks for the feedback guys and girls, I do appreciate it. I kind of agree that the drip isnt working at the moment... Might have to address that at some point. The bevel/drop shadow thing I stand by though.. If i take one or the other off, it feels flat in my opinion. Its also perhaps worth baring in mind that I don't yet know what I'm going to do around the logo really... I know I'm going to take things through a re-design at some point and hugely extend my portfolio, but I haven't really decided on styles etc yet, so this is just a bit of random messing that I kind of liked the look of really!

cantona - The logo is for an online portfolio, mine, to be precise. I'm moving more and more into web2.0 stuff nowadays, and wanted to come up with something to reflect the combination between "design" and that web2.0 kind of look.

Cheers once again!

If it doesn't stand up without the crazy effects then it probably needs more work.

great advice.

also, less is more, and if you use "tricks", use them mildly.

the best make-up job you can do will make the woman look like she's not wearing make-up at all.

when i look at a logo like this, i just see a list of photoshop layer effects:

-bevel/emboss
-gradient
-drop shadow

layer effects aren't bad, just tone them down, and maybe use fewer of them.

also, i would prefer to see the Xs more normal. not fused together like that.

Now I know the logo means nothing, just a collection of filters and grads I can honestly say it's crap 2.0.

can we add "web 2.0" to the banned words filter list?

replace it with something else, like maybe "anal leakage"

I thought it was just missing a few features, so took it upon myself to suggest something. I think it's about ready.

Don't be silly, nose. You may need to place it over a funky background. Ask for a transparent gif.

haha, yesterday i sent a .png comp to a sales rep so he could show it to a client on a sales call. so he says, "looks great, just send me a jpg so i can show it to the client. thanks!"

um, ok... apparently the clients eyeballs didn't have the .png plug-in installed.

i hate people sometimes.

lowest common denominator mate.

only ever two options with clients i've found
1) they are the LCD
2) they are one level above the LCD and are therefore ready to become a webmaster as they've just learnt how to the change the title tag.

lol... ok, to those of you who were at all serious in your comments, then thanks. To those deriders amongst you, who frown on the use of "web 2.0" on "your" forum, because forward movement in technologies frightens you, and threatens your security as the "elite" in your field (either that or you just have a problem with the terminology... Cant see why... Its been adopted by, err, almost everyone)... well... It wouldn't be polite for me to comment.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, and I'll certainly take it all into consideration in the rest of the development cycle. Incidentally, theres no bevel/emboss on there, just objects shifted around a bit, but that is kind of unimportant here... The point is that you're not feeling it, and thats cool. At the end of the day, people need to look at the logo and feel something, and its not evoking the correct feelings in you, I guess. Time for a rethink.

Oh... and "transmogrify"... or whatever your name is, "Beta" would imply that I am actually developing an application... I'm not. Thanks for your... err... "efforts".
