Working on a resume
I'm trying to rebuild my resume but I was wondering if I should just leave it plain or create it with design look. Does anybody know any site that will jelp me get an idea how to present my portfolio and resume. Your answer is much appreciated. thanks!!! Last edited by Ritchelle : 08-11-2006 at 23:40. |

I can't think of a site right now off the top of my head, but here's one little pointer in the right direction. Sure, designing graphics for the background of your resume seems like an amazing idea, give it a little more flare, but that's the key, it has to be just a little bit. Remember, you do have to sometimes fax your resume, and first off, if it's not fit for gray scale, then it won't come out right, and secondly if there's a lot of it going on, that's more toner they would use just to get your phone number and brief idea of whether they are interested or not. I never thought companies bitched that much about toner waste until I actually spent a day in the same office as the office manager, I think every time I got up to grab my printed page, she made some remark about how I should be thankful they aren't someone who charges for all that. So just for that, I printed out the largest e-book I had on my computer at the time, and just sat there and grinned as it came out, page by page. |

My personal feeling is that CVs should be an exercise in typography. I can't think of a situation where anything beyond typography would be necessary. I don't see the point in spending hours designing a logo for yourself because you're just a person trying to get employed, not a start-up company. I don't see the point in fancy illustrations (unless maybe your an illustrator - but then that's what your portfolio is for). Just keep it simple and stylish and demonstrate a good grasp of typography. |
