If it's really too much for you to spend ATM, get a pirated copy. However, once you make a buck or two, come clean with it. It shouldn't be long until you out-earn the program's worth...if you're worth your salt. Fireworks, by Adobromedia, is a little less expensive. IMO, it sucks compared to Photoshop (sorry Fireworks lovers). I thought it would be the first thing to go when Macromedia was purchased by Adobe. Sadly, Fireworks V.8 was recently released. fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

microsoft paint, a true classic. You know I had a client bring me a logo designed in Microsoft Paint, all primary blues red and greens. So this is your concept I thought and off I went to recreate it properly in Illustrator - but oh no, the client actually wanted the MS paint version. |

Gimp is excellent as a temporary, i repeat, temporary solution to your graphics needs. But, as the guys said, you need to spend money to make money. You can do a lot with Gimp, but in the long run you're going to end up feeling very restricted. Plus, as mentioned, the UI is annoying as heck. However, if all you're going to use these programs for is web graphics then I wouldn't waste the money... Gimp can give you everything you need for basic web graphics. If you're going all out on some design I would definately go for PS. |
