Design for music..

Read an intersting article a while back on the differences betweeen designing for a private company and designing for the public sector, and it got me wondering whether designing for music was different also.

Design for music is something I'd love to get into, but never really tried or been asked to do. Who do you deal with - the record label? The manager? The artist? What is the pay like - could you expect more, or is the competition such that it doesn't pay much - but I suppose that's like any job, depends on the size of the client and what's required.

Is there anyone here who does album covers, posters etc.? How did you get into that line of work?

Well, my teacher and now friend worked for atantic records. She told me that you have to follow some rules when it comes to images and things of that nature. But it was really the artist the one with the ideas and it was the job of the desingers to refine them. ANother teacher of mine does posters for the underground rock scence, she doesnt get paid much but she loves it. It was really all connection based with her. I done a couple of designs for posters and albums for people i have met that are starting out and need things done. ALl connection based aswell.

I've done a few things for pretty small-scale local bands / clubs etc so can't really help much on pricing of things but found the meetings with them quite interesting. Although you'd assume you'd have a lot more creative freedom, in reality the (slightly) larger clients would ask for their stuff to look pretty clean cut and professional and that "they're paying money for a website that people will treat more like a business than an arty band / club".
