Does anybody know how to make a cool image border like on the top of swikiri.com. They have this really cool border around that image and I have always wanted to do something like that but I could never figure out how. Any help would be greatly apreaciated. By the way, I don't have illustrator or photoshop, but I do have Fireworks and some other simple tools. |

There are several ways you can create them. The first would be to buy some ink, paint, brushes and/or a roller. Just create some marks onto white paper. Scan it (when it's fully dried) and layer the marks using the multiply or screen layer effects to create the frame. Some software companies and individuals make 'ready-made' frame effects available. e.g. http://www.photoshop-stuff.com/fclick/fclick.php?fid=10 You can probably find many ready-made ones by searching on Google for: photoshop +vignette +grunge or photoshop +frame +tutorial Try terms such as 'edge effects' too. Other sites to check would include: http://www.teamphotoshop.com/ http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/ http://www.myjanee.com/PSRL/tutfx.htm |

or you could make a brush...and just heavily fsck it up.... basically...take some photo......run a very heavy threshold (image > threshold) on it, then select either the white or black and delete, then add some random noise and stuff to it, reduce the opacity to 35% or something, ctrl+a, edit>define brush grab your paintbrush and have some fun this is good too cuz it's very re-useable and transferable audentes fortuna iuvat

if you notice, this site is based on pixels. i think the way i would go about this is to take the photo on the background layer in photoshop. i would create another layer for the edges. i would take the single pixel pen tool and draw all around the edges adding random speckles to create that roughened dithered effect. once i got the effect i wanted. i would select the "edge layer" image with the lasso tool, then move to the background layer and press delete. **if you create this on a separate layer it will allow you to easily import other photos and just adjust the edge layer accrodingly and keep poppin out new files! |

Put that image in a layer Use a custom brush with the eraser tool If you want that "glow" effect: 1.- Copy the same image in a new layer (top) 2.- Blur it by 50% 3.- Play with the opacity layer types (multiply, lighten, etc) Cheers Fedex |

i have seen filters around to get the same effect (definitely seen it for fireworks), not as rough or grungy but almost, then i would add layers and play around with brushes to give it a more random effect. or... just play with brushes, colours (looks like theyve used a few colours), pressures and layers in photoshop until youre happy. or... not. http://www.misprintedtype.com/ Go to the "Airbag" section once you're in the site and download the brushes for Photoshop. These are all great grungey things, and would help create that effect. Just be sure to use the pencil tool (which will give you a pixellated edge, rather than a smooth one), rather than the brush tool to give you the right effect. Then it's just a case of overlaying some of the brushes with different opacities etc to get the desired effect. I've used the brushes before and they were an absolute God-send!! Hope that helps, Phil |
