What can be said

Quote:
A US man shot his postman so that he would get sent to prison for life and escape his crippling medical debts, investigators say.

What a prick. I hope he gets fucking beat on in jail.

Closer to £53,000 - glad I don't use BBCs conversion rates when doing work for UK clients.

That was George Lazenby and no, he wasn't the first, Sean Connery was. Lazenby only did it once.

Sure he deserves to go to prison, but we should also look at why he did what he did. The fact is that in the United States, medical expense is a real danger to the lower and middle classes (even the upper-middle classes). I recently recieved over $10,000 in treatments, and even with insurance, I have ended up in debt of over $3,000.

The Bush administration recently signed into law their new bankruptcy bill, which doesn't allow people like the man above to claim bankruptcy in a case like this (or makes it extremely difficult). Something's wrong when you allow credit card company lobbyists to write new bankruptcy legislation.

It's pretty pathetic when, in the wealthiest (by a huge margin) country in the world, a man feels forced to murder someone in order to get out of his debts.

He should go to prison, obviously, but our Senators and representatives and our President should be ashamed of themselves, too.

Good points mate.

My wife was in hospital for 10 days last year and with no insurance we got stuck with a $22,000 bill

I remember you saying that. I'm just lucky that 1) I had insurance and 2) I have (so far) avoided surgery.

I'd hate to see how much a lumbar spinal fusion and a 5-7 day stay in a hospital would cost.

Ah, thats the one - didn't think 007 would take a job as a postman (even if it was undercover, he'd still wear his tux).

And yeah, poor state of affairs that medical insurance; makes you realise just how valuable the NHS is over here in the UK...
