Microsoft Exchange Server

Why would someone be using Microsoft Exchange Server?

We have a client using it now but they don't know why. They're paying for it though. They're moving servers and we've said to just use POP3 or IMAP .

What would they be missing out on?

We use it here on our network, its a sort of central system so you can access your mail through blueberries and webmail etc and you still have your contacts, inbox etc so they're not tied to a specific pc.

While you're on the subject, does anyone know how to add accounts to an Exchange server?

We have a client who keeps asking me. I keep telling them I'm not IT support.

Exchange is more than just mail, its also a groupware server which can handle things such as tasklists, contacts, calendars etc.

That said, you can only access it properly with Microsoft Outlook. Any other clients will need to use IMAP or POP access (assuming it is enabled on the Exchange server), and this is slightly slower and doesn't support most Exchange features.

I'd look into open source groupware solutions personally, and use standard IMAP or POP mail (IMAP preferably). I wish we were using something other than Exchange as IMAP access in Thunderbird is very slow (I use Thunderbird in Linux).

The university I work for switched to MSExchange recently. I like it quite well. It features (at least for us) a web-based email application that's better than any webmail app I've ever used.

Of course, it works great in IE, but not as well in other browsers - however, it still works nicely. Everything is stored on the server similarly to IMAP.

I like MSExchange from what I've seen of it.

paulanthony - I've had no problems with the webmail app through a firewall.
