Encourage me / Discourage me
was thinking of adding a poll about... PINK and TURQUOISE - two probably not very popular colours... with probably similar qualities... (If you had to choose between those two which one would you pick?) do you think it's 'worth' it? thought I'll ask for an opinion first as I dont wanna litter the forum with pointless stuff if you know what I mean... Encourage me / discourage me. would this be useful info to anybody? I am personally very interested in colour theory related stuff... Dorian ...

Check this - [img:c7eb515f7d]http://www.creativedistraction.com/pink_palette.gif[/img:c7eb515f7d] I notice you said that the two colours had similar qualities. In what way? I would have said they had very different qualities and meanings. Andrew Parker

Andrew, ok... ok... I didn't make myself clear... I meant BRIGHT 'pure' versions of those... Personally I think pink is a very interesting colour - 'coz you don't need to do much to it before it starts looking obscure! (and it's nice playing with people's preconceptions Pink (as a general 'term') is branded with certain associations... colour of ('white') skin, lips, 'girlie', corporate colour of barbie Now take turquoise... Seen any flowers? I can only think of birds feathers and minerals/stones...! The colour is almost artificial! It has been celebrated by ancient cultures - native Americans... Ancient Egypt... Quite a rare colour... achieved hight status in the past! Still, I think probably the most dodgy of all Turquoise - the colour of bathrooms? I think it's a strange one! ...

Had a quick look and the supposed meaning of pink - Is associated with female essence of life. It is viewed as red rendered mild and gentle and therefore associated with tenderness, calmness, pleasantness, and sweet. According to Akan social though, these attributes are generally considered as essential aspects of the female essence. Turquoise is supposed to be restfull. Personally I like the bright pink on the left of andrews chart there, it reminds of some Japanese neon writing with big blue outlined letters and strange cartoon characters ?! ..................

...which makes me think... are we as designers not supposed to stay neutral about things like colours? I think it's best draw from the applicable symbolism - not let personal feelings interfere with the purpose... (but that's just me) ...
