Moving to London

I have just got a new job in London that starts in October. Problem is, I am a northerner and I do not know London very well. The site is about 10 min' walk from Waterloo station. Does anyone have any advice of locations that I can live? I would need somewhere to park my car, as this it is needed for my job.

Cheers

SOL

My base location will be London, which I will have to live near. However I will be working on clients sites that could be anywhere in the country.

How close to work are you looking to work? in fact how often will you need to be there if your contracted to different companies all the time, will you not go straight fromn home? maybe just a once a week in trip.

You looking for hip and happening living, cheep, safe, well to do, "nice area" etc etc ?

You after a flat, house, flatshare?

Budget of say about £500 a month on rent. I am not bothered whether it is a flat or a house. I have no idea how often I will be travelling to client sites, I am guessing not much in my first year of the job. I would like to be within an hours travelling time to work. Although if that means living in a nasty area I would reconsider.

just south of waterloo, stockwell has some very nice houses - they're surrounded by high rises and estates but there's a couple of roads that are beautiful and you forget where you are (till you get to the end of the road)

then again, for £500 / month you should start looking in watford.

Best bet, come down, talk to anyone you know who lives down here, Check Loot and go see a load of places, most of which are likely to be shit holes, but you'll get the odd place that's alright.

The best one I ever went to was a "Spacious Studio Flat"... that'd be your mates front room plus the cupboard under the stairs which doubled as a bathroom (not even a shower in there !?) The bed was suspended from the ceiling and the kitchenet - hob, was underneath it with no vent. As an added bonus the place had been burnt out the week before - but it'll be ready in a weeks time !?

"What do ya want for it then mate"

"£210 a week"

"You're taking the piss right?"

"nah, alright then I'll do it for you for £190"

"I Don't think it's gonna happen mate"

"alright £180"

*I walked out*

"How much do you expect to pay you wanker"

"erm?"

"alright £175, final offer"

he was still droping it as I walked down the road. Prick.

A monkey a month isn't gonna get ya anything IN or even close to london - not even a garage.

Look for something at least 15 miles outside of London, on the Waterloo line, maybe a couple of miles from the train station. Then you can be fine with parking your car and when you need to go into the office you can park at your local station and get the train into work.

Too close to London and you'll be looking at a single room.

you can get a pretty good house/flat share for 500quid a month. Some mates of mine have a place in Docklands and between the 3 of 'em its pretty reasonable (in london terms...extortionate to everyone else)

take danny boys advice and get a copy of loot (its handy for knock of gear too. Mums the word tho, eh) and an a-z and see whats what. If you have to drive in central london then dont forget to budget for the congestion charge too.

Try places like http://www.gumtree.com, www.findaproperty.com too - plenty of stuff on there.
