I have used wordpress a couple of times for clients, mostly just install and skinning. It took me 10 minutes to get it running, one night to do the original design and a couple hours to tweak the new template I am using now. Wordpress is really easy to use.

EDIT: I have another site based on wordpress in the works right now too called "StrangeMachine" that will mostly be a site featuring a different strange pic/video/site whatever daily.

you don't need any at all. In fact my server has Fantastico on it and it just took 3 clicks to install wordpress. I have never once touched the code for the site itself.

It's fairly simple to set up, I personally had issues with lack of documentation for those without much technical know-how more than anything.

I have done a simple install of wordpress which was really easy but it's just a case of the extent to which im going to need to hack it for my purposes.

I know that expression engine is very customisable, but again that could turn out to be a mission

I have two licences of expression engine. Be warned, you cannot use the default thing in any way whatsoever.

You'll have to revamp it.

Default Site Weblog - ruined my day when I saw that.

Also, they've been telling us they're releasing 2.0 since early summer. It was due to be released at the end of summer 2008, still not a peep and we're entering winter.

Yes, definitely need more sites like this. Though, the trashbat.co.uk is currently under construction, so i couldn't see the funny monkey's dancing and singing and bashing GW Bush.
