The extent to which you can rip someone off?

I saw this website and really liked the layout/idea. I've changed it a little, but it looks very similar. I was even thinking of using a similar color palette.

I'm wondering how much inspiration you can copy before it becomes ethically and legally wrong.

When you describe the artwork as being 'changed a little'.
Inspiration is just that, it's the idea which helps inspire you to create something - not just copy the layout and colour palette.

This is not sounding good from your point of view.

Someone saw our company website once and liked it so much that the downloaded the whole website, changed a few graphics (not the phone numbers or form submissions mind you) AND THEN emailed us with a link to his website complimenting us how much he liked it.... Soon there after it was mysterious pulled down by his hosting company.

The moral of the story? Don't just copy take the idea you liked. Change, expand, and build on it until it something that you really really like.

Eh, I've changed it enough imo.

I should probably change the color palette though.

its going in a very similar direction.
However a lot of websites look very similar to eachother... in layout atleast.

A good color change and some more personal touches could easily make a site more original and less ripped off.

Clearly.

Edit: Now that I'm fleshing it out in psd. It doesn't look anything like their design. I dunno wtf I was thinking.
