Free minion for a week

Got a young work experience lad in for the week and the little rascal is pretty quick with the hoover and the old filing cabinet, so i guess im gonna have to find him some "interesting" tasks.

So far ive got a couple magazine ad briefs for him to play with, but i just wondered if anyone had any suggestions, i remember my w/e and it was shite, i hated it, would be nice if this lad doesnt end up hating design, and or me for that matter!

Give him a nice pad and a fancy pen and get him involved in the ideas process.

Failing that, have him design something wacky: "Design a new way of eating food", "design a more colourful environment", "design out waste", etc.

(Add specifics and requirements if they have experience or are older.)

Gig poster / artwork for the office wall.

Let the little tike play around in Photo and Illustrator for a subject he most probably enjoys.

I think the pen and paper option will keep him busy for a bit tomorrow, then i think moving him onto illy or something, hes only young but he looks like he can handle himself. Liking the design a working environment idea, as we are looking to update the studio so could be interesting.

You could try asking him if there is anything he is interested in doing - guessing what he is into is somewhat hit and miss, although asking him may be just as equally hit and miss!

I'll let him flick through my books in the morning, see if i can gauge from that, maybe help him find his own angle.

I once had a work experience lad with me who was in a band. He produced design concepts for a CD booklet/cover and poster for them, then printed them all and produced mock ups etc.

I use to have an option of fake design briefs which would cover a wide range of ‘youth’ interests:

nightclub
fast food restaurant
band
mobile phone company
clothing manufacturer

let them choose which business they want to promote, then take them through the design process from pens & paper, to printing off laser proofs of as many items they can be arsed to develop.

Give them pointers/advice as they go and act as their client (in a softish way!) through the stages.
