I agree with everything said above.

That said, the issue does need resolving one way or the other. Ronaldo is an employee of Manchester United. Employees have rights. He doesn't appear to have the same rights as everyone else (I can quit my job and move to anywhere I please) for a whole host of reasons (the £10m Manchester United paid to buy him from Sporting Lisbon is just one).

A quick example would be a footballer being misled by the agent representing him and signing a five-year contract with club X. No matter how much he's being compensated for playing for them, if he wants to leave, I think he should have the right to do so.

Perhaps footballers will all be free agents one day, and can move between clubs as they wish. Good or bad thing for football?

International and domestic law > contracts in many cases.
