Heres a simple one.
A tragically fictitious guy flies from London Heathrow(England) to New York JFK (USA) on Tuesday. He stays in New York for two days and two nights and flies back to Heathrow from New York, without going anywhere else first, on Tuesday. He doesnt die in New York btw, which is what most people say first.

'New York for two days and two nights ' is the name of popular hotel is JFK

Are they two days and two nights as measured on the planet Mercury?

Sorry to be a bit late back - been playing with my shiny new iPhone 3G

Jono pretty much got it. It makes no difference whether they burn at consistent rates or not - I stated categorically that the entire string will burn in exactly one hour. Even if the string burns inconsistently - it just means that one end will burn further than the other, but that both flames will meet at some point after exactly 30 minutes. One flame may only burn 10% of the string, but by definition if the string will burn out in 1 hour, that means the other flame must have burned the rest (i.e. 90%).

I think the inconsistent burn is thrown in to make it more difficult. If they burned at a steady rate there would be less variables for your brain to handle, and you'd probably get the answer much quicker. You might have to think about it for a while, but I can assure you that it is logically sound.

OK, don't spoil the weekend. What's the answer?

Did the guy actually fly to NY in spite of the ridiculous "anti-terrorist" regulations the Neocons have put in place to make visiting the greatest country on earth even more of a pain in the arse or did he go to the airport with his secretary and spend an afternoon practising unsafe sex in the Holiday Inn? That way he could get back home for a quick Tuesday shag with the missus.

sorry good folks - forgot to post answer before i left work on friday.
The answer is a rather anti-climatic: Replace 'Tuesday' with British Airways for example.

fuckin hell ... thats a piss poor answer.

i remember meeting this guy once who reckoned that there was an actual answer to the question 'how long is a piece of string ?'

he reckoned he'd read somewhere that there was an answer.

prick.
