Wow it's like you read my mind. I'm pretty much in the same boat. Working in-house in a marketing department for a great company, but one that deals nothing with design. I joined this forum because I missed the interaction with other designers, the critiques, being up on the latest trends etc.

But the thought of going out on my own and freelancing is scary, and my salary here isn't that bad. That's what's holding me back.

I wish I had invented boxes of broken biscuits. They are biscuits, but broken, so you never know what you might get. Once I got a whole garibaldi.

having to scroll down through numerous replies in this thread and responding to your post.

Laziness, women, partying, crazy family members, school debt, debt in general, price of fuel, price of whores, price of a stripdance by an ugly stripper, price of a blowjob, price of jail time for nailing a minor (she was hot , you would have hit it too, so respect!) price of a new apple mac book pro, purchase of a international one way planet ticket in order to evade police in the states set me back more years that i would like to count, the cost of paying for a doctors advice that could have cost me nothing if i would have first looked on wikipedia.

Basically the price of living.
Both being born and dieing come at no cost to you, whats expensive is living. DUH!!

I think the secret is to keep your desires and requirements realistic and then they are readily achievable and you have a happy life.

As for confidence, set small achievable goals and reward/praise yourself when you complete them. Then set new more challenging goals and achieve them. Continue ad infinitum.

I don't see why it should be odd to ask how global warming is stopping someone from doing what they want to do!
Enquiring minds need to know.

A lack of confidence in my own ability and an apprehension about the future. This leads to procrastination. The procrastination leads to faliure. And then this faliure reduces my confidence!

Starting a design degree was a great confidence booster, as many people compliment me on my work. And I have to remind myself that procrastination is normal. You just have to look at how long the world's been procrastinating about global warming to see that...

Lol, this is such a grim topic!

yeah, the prospect of being overfunded is usually less than likely.

“I think creative people are an interesting combo of ego and insecurity. The ego part is wanting to be great, and the insecurity part is not believing your good, so you keep working your ass off. Thos two things pushed me all the time.”

I always wanted to be artist, or a spaceman.

Now, I just want to own my own lake.

Does flying not require gravity? otherwise it'd be floating.
