Snopes reckons undetermined:

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Dog Starved for Art Exhibit

But I'd be surprised if doing what is claimed would be any more legal in Costa Rica than it would be here.

Unimaginable cruelty if it's true. But I hope it's a hoax. I don't think it is, but I hope so. I like doggies.

The only thing that gives me pause is how many people had to see it and pass it by. I don't think I could have done that. There is an unspoken non-interference rule in art, but I just don't think I could ignore it in this case.

Also, according to the Snopes article, he gallery owner claimed it was a stunt and the dog was actually fed after hours.

I don't agreew with it - but what about the homeless people that we pass on the streets everyday that are starving?

Is that not more unimaginably cruel than having a dog die die in a gallery.

No, because the animal doesn't have a choice. Starvation is inflicted on it in the name of art/entertainment.
It's not as if the dog can get a few quid for a burger or 6 pack of Special.

As said Nick, I don't agree with the exhibition at all.

I am sure the homeless would disagree with you though. Many are forced into it with no choice, and no way out.

p.s. Crack not burgers...

@roto: You're right! I stand by what I said: pit bulls should be spayed/neutered out of existence. They're a menace (responsible for the majority of all dog attacks in the US) and humans never should have created them in the first place.

No, it's not. Nobody ties up a homeless person (though they aren't "choosing" their predicament, either) and forces them to starve to death and puts it on exhibit. But they have options - there are government programs, non-profits, and charities to help the homeless.

Same goes for stray domesticated animals; except, in many cases, they have the added feature of being unable to care for themselves and completely reliant on humans. Many breeds would go extinct very quickly without humans - pugs for example. So, this becomes sort of a variant of the "China Shop Doctrine" - you break it, you buy it - or in the case of domestic animals: you create it, you care for it. And actively neglecting a domestic animal is abuse.

Your comparison is completely unfair and illogical.

I read a comment about this and I'm going to mirror it here. I saw we tie up the artist who did this, and starve him for the sake of "art". He'd get what he deserves if this is true.

I dont know much about this but most of what I have read is some good points on the subject.
I take this to symbolise the fact that when its a dog we care because somebody is suposed to look after it, when its a human we asume they can take care of ourselves, I guess it made me ask the question, who is responsible for those who are not rsponsible for themselves.

I also know that there is no corelation between the dog and human life I just think up my own crap.

Maybee this dog was already homeless and going to die anyway, the artist just put it on show to show us what horible fucks we are, there are probab;\ly thousands of dogs like this on the streets anyway.

Sorry im drunk

I like pitbulls. My old roommate had two, they were great dogs. Really loyal, very mellow.

I think they have the potential for brutal violence, but it requires an owner to raise them that way before they become that way.

animals are animals. tigers brought up in captivity could easily 'snap' and attack their human trainers or whatever/whoever else. i don't know why we should expect any different from other animals.

hell, my roommates cat thats been here since kittenhood with a good 'upbringing' regularly tries to beat, rip, scratch the hell out of my own cat. definitely not cute and playful with each other.

as for homeless people, fuck the lot of them! half the people i know are useless, lazy drunkards who still manage to pay rent.
