Thinking about picking up an ex-demo MacBook Pro 17" Intel Code 2 Duo 2.4Ghz 2GB/160GB for £1224. Not sure.

It's a pre-2008 model - first generation Pro, not the newly specced one released last month, which is probably why they're selling them off. The Quad refers to 2x Dual Core Xeons, rather than a single Quad Core. It's not a terrible buy, since they're still very nice machines, but it looks like you'll need a monitor. Slightly more than I'd pay though.

If it's not marked as upgraded it'll be the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT stock card which is highly underpowered in this day and age. It'll also only support one monitor.

At the moment the best upgrade available is the Radeon X1900XT which although pretty old itself is still a very capable card (I get an average of about 120-160fps in World of Warcraft with everything set to maximum).

The new Mac Pros released last month can take an 8800GT (very nice card) but Nvidia/Apple fucked up so they won't work in the previous generation of machines. This has caused absolute pandemonium and dozens of protest threads on the Mac Pro forums to the point where Nvidia are supposed to be re-engineering a new 8800GT witha new Bios. A regular 8800GT will work in Boot Camp under XP/Vista, just not in Mac OS for the time being, but that should hopefully change very soon.

Alonsus. Do you play? I'm a fairly casual player. Not as hardcore as a lot of the addicts.

Fuck! I think I'm level 45 as well. We should definitely go do a few instances - I can never find good people who aren't whiny kids.

without a normal map, hdr or real shadow in sight. Graphically, it's bottom of the class. Even when it came out it was some fair ways behind in technical terms.

In saying that, HL2 was pretty nippy on my old 1st gen intel imac, and that uses all of the above.

Ok, HL2 Ep II runs like greased lightning at 1920x1200 with high settings. The point is, the Radeon still holds up reasonably well despite its age.
