Mac firewall, gratis of course…

Rather unwisely I run my mac with absolutely no protection whatsoever, no firewall, virus-checker, nothing.

Whilst macs are relatively 'safe' this is surely rather foolish of me as my mac is pretty much permanently online.

Can anyone recommend any good, and preferably free, mac firewall software, virus-check software etc?

I thank you.

don't know much about all this.

but do know to avoid symantec!

there's a free virus checker called something dodgy like Clam AV. i use that from time to time

apples own firewall does the job but a hardware firewall in the router is by far the best bet.

Cheers Gooder, I'm no expert in this area either.

I've not had any problems with my mac, just thought it might be a good idea to look into it a bit.

OS X has a firewall running by default, unless you turned it off. Otherwise, you don't need anything else. If you do receive a virus, it won't run without the OS prompting you for your administrator credentials (that's what makes OS X lovely). In other words, you don't need to install antivirus software unless you're the type to punch in your root credentials blindly.

This is what I've read anyway - I don't have experience with dealing with viruses on my Mac... because it never comes up.

The only reason to have a virus checker is out of courtesy for windows users in your network.

Use OS X's firewall or the firewall on your router to stop the pilfering of transmitted info by "the evil ones".

That's it... enjoy hassle free computing (for the next 5 years at any rate)!
