I don't understand how someone who needs to borrow £300 can afford to pay back £36 every four weeks for a year.

yep, its for the poor familys who need a washing machine or something and cant get the money together.
Salford is rife with these door step loan companies and places that sell goods on finance for similarly extortionate aprs.

I don't think there is a legal limit for APR, I have seen a few companies offering small short term loans at over 1000% APR, not sure what the difference is between them and loan sharks.
