michael moore's sicko

just watched this, and it was a very good documentary, obviously moore put his usual anti-bush bias on it like his others, but it was a moving and very well constructed documentary, definitely makes you think, better than fahrenheit 9/11.

shame on you, usa.

Haven't watched it yet, but I tend to take his stuff with a grain or two of salt. And we should have national health insurance - shame on us, indeed.

Everyone is Britain always complains about the NHS (national health service), but actually it's a lot better than in America where you have to pay and everything is based around money, so basically hospitals always give people the cheapest and usually worst option of treatment.

That's not true.

It's in the hospital's interest to give you the highest quality (read: most expensive) treatment.

It's in the insurance company's interest to refuse to pay for it and leave the burden on the hospital or the patient. This is why people argue that we should have national health insurance coverage.

The NHS is shit.

A national embarrassment.

Dirty hospitals full of infections and inept or overworked staff.

Seriously ill people left waiting around for hours/days in corridors due to the lack of beds?

Where's the dignity?

4th richest country in the world?

It's a fucking joke.

Makes you proud to be British.

No, it doesn't. My father is currently in a hospital in Bury, Suffolk. He went in late August complaining of chest pains, after which he has had a by-pass operation, his left leg amputated, he had become incontinent and his short-term memory problems have intensified into full-blown dementia. He thinks he's on a cruise!
Bury Hospital is a fly-blown dump. The nurses are happy to serve but there are far too few of them.

Some hospitals are ten times better than others, i've heard people praising the cleanliness of hospitals and how quickly they got treated, and others who have said they are shitholes.

The media highlights the bad points only, thus influencing the public's opinion on the nhs as a whole.

I'm planning to see this soon. I like Moore, although Fahrenheit 9/11 was a little too JFK for me, to be honest. And boring.

i find moore's points of view to be one-sided sometimes.. havent seen sicko but i know people who have seen farenheit 9/11 come out thinking they know everything about bush and america now, when in fact the still need to look at the bigger picture.

for example, a few american friends of mine were quick to point out they never voted bush because of bush himself, but rather the republican party and depending where your from in the states you can benefit more from being in a republican stronghold rather than democrat. like farmers in illinois got better benefits with the republicans than with democrats etc

americans rarely give foreign affairs much thought when they vote, like, america's huge. ive met americans who didnt know what the capital of england was or never even heard of wales! so they're less likely to know where israel is or who the taliban are..

ive probably veered way off topic here!

Americans vote democrat and care about foreign affairs if they can see the sea.

If not, republican all the way.
