This is a question for all the web designers out there. I am looking for a site that would be at least as complex as say CNN.com. Complex in that there would be alot of media, up to date news stories etc. This site would also include a profile/networking section for users similar to facebook and myspace. If you were quoting someone to build this site what would you charge based on the information provided?

For that? More complex than CNN with social networking? At least $100,000. Probably add another zero to be realistic. I hope you've got some venture capitalists in your address book!

I agree. Development time would be a factor as well, something like that would drag on for a year or more. Plus of course hosting, you would need a hefty bunch of servers to mimic CNN / Facebook et al.

It wouldn't have to be as large as CNN.com right from the start. What about if it was a front page with news and media (Some video). And then it had links to the social network part of the site. I guess i didn't word it very well. If it was just a social networking site alone, how much would i be looking at? Btw thank you all for the replies

For just a social network, I start around 10k and at least 3 months, and that really just covers the membership + profiles + photo/video/media upload.

if you were going through a design studio you would be talking serious money there - i'd guess at least 6 figures depending on your currency
