It's a pile of crap.

The Timmy Mallet / Tizwas observations are spot on. What 1980s kids telly has to do with the Olympics I'll never know.

Exactly the same for me. Must've been the Simpsons animated gif.
Scared me for life.

I see you're from Mexico. Now, Mexico 1968 Olympics' branding rocked, it's stuff of ledgend! But in it's day (I read anyway, I wasn't alive then) that it was badly recieved by it's public. That branding was ahead of it's time, and was the bollocks. It was original, it didn't use a mexican cliche, but went for bold typography, and bold graphics which even today beats seven lumps of shit out of recent Olympic brandings (Munich Olympics, Otl Aicher, 1972 on par in my opinion).

I really believe that we've not seen all that this 2012 brand has to offer. 5 years is a long time, who knows where we're going to be seeing this mark, and what it's going to be doing. I'm quite exited about this brand, I don't know what the fuck to expect from it. Which is quite refreshing, to be honest!

I just hope we look back in fondness to the 2012 branding as we do the 1968.
Well yes, mexico 68 were awsome graphics, and also were based in the
op-art that was the rage of the moment. And now in london, well, just time will tell who has the reason.

By the way Lance wymann who designed 68 graphics is still very close to Mexico, he invaded mexico city with graphics in the 70's (subway signage, and endless logos for institutions), from time to time he comes to mexico to do some projects and workshops, but in my personal opinion the oliympics were his highlight. The rest of his work is very repetitive or similar to to the 68.

It's crap and time won't make the design any better.
It will only get worse once the 80's goes out of fashion in a few years and the style will go back to being the big joke it should be.

Sorry to dig this up again, but this is worth it.

Any of you come around yet and, almost, like it now?

i always quite liked it. not love it. just like it.

said on another forum that i have a sneaky suspicion that the logo will be in national colours for the competing countries kit (i.e. red white and blue for 'team GB')

"The thing that worries me is that left to most of the London based, Guardian reading, ironic tshirt wearing design community we would have ended up with another, yes another, HelveticaMunichWankFest, lauded by the design press and irrelevant to everyone else. Meaningless, stylistic rubbish. Graphic design at its worst."

I agree with that, It is good it's different - but I still don't like it on a purely aesthetic basis and no amount of clever analysis will change that.

Woo hoo.

I still don't like it. I can agree with much of what has been said about it in its defence, and about the way it's (and the industry's own reaction) fucked up the view of what design folk get upto with a pot of money.

It's bold it's brave it's not helvetica or gil. It doesn't have a thousand wanky things it could have in it. Credit to all the things it isn't. But it still doesn't make it a good logo to me. And it really should be. Shouldn't it? Or was the only way to be bold and brave to have something that's actually unpleasing on the eye.

Loved the helveticawankfest remark too though

And for gods sake, testing the videos for epilepsy was the least you could do in this day of neurotic accessibility over point size etc.
