Any martial arts fans/practitioners here?
I know this forum is mostly UK people, and to me that is a dark, foreign and sometimes disturbing world. (Though being Eastern European myself and growing up in a household where you get yelled at for calling football "soccer", I'm not too far away myself) But is anyone into general stuff like MMA/BJJ or perhaps into watching UFC/Pride? Opinions, just curious. And I've already heard of all the usual homo erotic jokes, so feel free to share new material. ![]() |

Watch as much as I can, UFC, Pride, IFL, EliteXC, Bodog Fight, whatever I can get my hands on. Was going to start training in BJJ but was going to go with brother however he went back to Australia, and I am going in under a month, so maybe I will join a BJJ gym when I get there. |

Ok cool, there are a few...so atleast not all of you Red Bull hippies and house cats... I've sorta interested in fighting in amateur MMA in about 3 years...I think it'd be a good learning experience, but I have to age a bit more, train more, and gain 15 more pounds to meet the weight requirement... Ha. See you in the cage bitches!!! |

K1 and Pride are like national institutions here in Japan. They love it, nice bit of gore at tea time. I used to do kendo. I've also been successfully mugged twice. Without a large stick, I was useless. |

used to do karate as a young un, and on and off ever since (more off than on!) fought in competitions too. however touch contact doesn't teach you a fat lot when it comes to a real world situation. |

Used to do a bit of MMA... JiuJitsu and wrestling mostly... was never quite so into the striking arts... Did some kickboxing to round things out a bit, though. Haven't done anything in a few years, though... Got more than a bit soft around the edges since then :/ I watch as much MMA as I can... I find it to be about the purest form of competition going... One guys skill against another, potentially in very different disciplines... The technical aspect to it is really interesting. |

Did you watch the early UFC from the 90's? Perhaps then skill really shone through in a fight, especially among Royce Gracie. But now that everyone's worked on their ground game, it's back to basics. All of the victories you see among heavy weights is either a vicious ground-and-pound or some kind of crude submission. Kinda depressing really, as it shatters what you expected "martial arts" to be. Things like Television and the 'net has really exposed martial arts I think...gone are the feudal days when people merely hear some sort of secret rumor of an ancient Shaolin temple of the 9 hidden chi dragons or some shit like that, filled with undefeated warriors...now you just go into the ring, and get your ass handed to you like all other traditional martial artists. I do agree it's the purest form of competition, but many people still refuse to accept it. There are hardly any rules or "what ifs". |
