By having contacts you get access to more people in your network. This can expose jobs, potential clients, candidates for a vacancy, business opportunities etc.

im on it but I have no idea how to use it.....been sort of confused. the professor said we should use it for work contacts but I dunno. seemes kinda cash grab web2.0.......thoughts?

It's good network if you do some IT business. You can quickly gather some new contacts over your existing partners/co-workers/ex-classmates.
But some background is needed, you should be in business for a few years...
