Website Ads, Who should use them ? shouldnt ?

Hi,

I was thinking of having this in the Search Engine Promotion category, but it may not be that relevant, so guess this place is the best option.

So many people want to use Google Ads, Sponsored Links, etc.. thats fine, but in my personal opinion I find that its annoying (especially google ads), it ruins a webpage's design, and if its used on a somewhat "professional" website / company or service provider that it doesnt look so "professional" anymore.

So I wanted to get opinions on the matter. What sort of websites should/could make use of Ads vs those that shouldnt ?

How many of you actually click on Google Ads, or sponsored links on websites ? just out curiosity. (guess could start a poll, but its a bit offtopic of this post )

I find that a lot of times websites that are ranked in the first few result pages arent always the best, or have what Im looking for. Guess all these ads being used simply increase their ranking but the site isnt necessarily worth being in the first results. (again only personal opinion)

Many websites are completely funded by ads. Many people make a living off of ads on their website(s). Of course, to make that much you need a lot of visitors.

Ads make sense on publishing and community sites - magazines, blogs, forums (just look at DT ), myspace etc. Places where people go to get good information.

Of course, then you see some business sites (portfolios, other service-oriented sites) with ads on them and that screams "unprofessional".

I've clicked on a few ads in my lifetime. But people do click them, as I make some change every month on my site.

Simple rule of thumb, if you're selling something, don't have adverts, otherwise you're probably okay.
