You've heard this question a million times - How much should a designer charge?

Thats a slightly idealistic way of working it though.

If you've just started out freelancing, so don't have a reputation to trade off, and your based in a satelite town or small city then your gonna struggle to find clients who'll pay the 'ideal' amounts.

There's always some shit fucker down the road who'll do the work for next to nothing.

I reckon when starting as a freelancer you need to be prepared to work long hard hours for a pretty basic wage until your established with a decent rep and client base.

It's like some 15yr old who's mega at football, demanding £80,000 a week before he's even kicked a ball. He might be as talented as half the premiership but he's gotta clean the boots and get some games under his belt before the big contract comes in.

Back in the day (before the bubble burst) I was getting charged out at £1,000 per day, despite only getting £10,000 per year!

I agree, we normally charge £60 per hour design time, £50 per hour artwork time for larger clients and £50 design/£40 artwork for smaller clients.
