Ammendments

Is it just for me, or do amendments take just as long as the project itself?

I used to finish a project and await for the fixes, picks, amendments requests etc. Would probably be about 2 or 3 shots of them, accumulating to around a quarter of the length of the project...these days it takes about 50% of the total project length!

Do amendments take up much of your time?

depends how you handle them, and if you discussed a number of reasonable amendements before the job after which you start charging. If you make them aware that they will eventually pay for changes they'll tighten up the amount of amends they give you, if you are always doing them for free they'll keep going with every whim that comes into their head.

The contract I've written up clearly states that small changes are free and any changes requested by the client will be reviewed by me and if they're significant enough (I'd say more than a couple hours worth of work), I'll make out a form for "additional charges" and add that to the price. If they don't like it, the change isn't made.

So, I don't worry too much about major time-sucking changes.

There's a difference between aeshetic changes, which are a matter of opinion, and changes to the brief. Clients who keep shifting the goalposts (like one I'm working for at the moments ) should be made to pay for it.

Yes, I think I am going to add that to my contracts. I have nothing set in place for "changes"...so a definition needs to be formed so I am covered for time-taking ammendments.

Its all about politics!

Its a big horrible grey area, clients can turn nasty (or at least grumpy) when they think what they are asking for is a minor thing, and you think its a major change. Regardless of who is right or wrong, if the client isn't happy with you then its not good for your business reputation.

It's a good idea to get a feel for the clients personality. Luckily I could tell that this guy was going to be a nightmare from the start and added some extra time accoringly.
