Smoking ..
Has anyone recently given up or trying to ? I started sunday night using those 24 hour patches. They really work, I was quite surprised.. without them I could last till about lunch time before I got incredibly annoyed with everything and everyone. I still think about quite a few times but I can overcome the urge. The only side effect I have noticed is that I get really vivid dreams, which isnt really a bad thing; last night I came on as man united's sub and had a chance to score the winner but it bounced off the crossbar! Anyway I'd rather be giving my money to the nicotine patch company than the greedy government, I wonder what would happen if everyone gave up - would this country be able to survive? - I heard they get about £600Billion a year in tax. ..................

good luck m8, I couldnt do it! - what annoys me is that Nicotine is the most addictive & dangerous drug, closely followed by alcohol. But they remain legal because they are good taxable drugs. Something like cannabis which is proven less harmfull and addictive is illegal, I think one of the reasons behind this is that if it was legal the government couldnt make as much money from it - anyone with a few seeds and some lights could quite easily keep themselves supplied with it all year , hence no tax for the government. |

I got Pleurisi in August last year and had to stop for about 4 weeks so I saw it as the perfect opportunity to quit for good. Well, I didn't find it that hard and didn't smoke a single cigarette for about 3 months until Christmas when my social life took over. I find it physically impossible to drink and not smoke at the same time. So I'm still smoking. Part of my problem is that I don't want to give it up because I enjoy it and it's all too easy to push the long term health problems into the background. How annoying are those new warnings on the packs?! Andrew Parker

Well at least people now-a-days are warned about the health risks. Think of the poor people who started smoking, when they weren't told of the health risks (even when the companies making the cigarettes knew) who might not have even touched them if they had known, and have suffered cancer or died because of them! (From a non-smoker who has never touched a single cigarette because I knew of the side-effects. |

well 1 mars bar wont make u fat and one cig wont give u cancer Seriously I do think its a bloody disgrace the amount of money the government makes from cigs and then they complain that the NHS cant cope with the patients from smoking. They have known about the risks for years but why is only last week that cig advertising was banned ? |

started smoking 8 months ago - after a 6 months break It's all in the mind though... I remember how I was feeling while not smoking - I didn't miss it for a sec! It all restarted with an anniversary and a cigar... shouldn't have smoked that But hell... I enjoy it too... that's why I still smoke Can't do without a ciggy after a meal and while drinking... and after sex... or while 'thinking'.... ...so many excuses! ...

Gave up the smokes over 18 months ago - got to the end of a pack and didn't buy any more. Once I got past 1-2 weeks I never looked back - had a tug on a fag about 3 weeks in and couldn't stand it. The pub is the killer though - sucha social thing. These days I hate smoky pubs because I come out with my clothes reeking (and you really do begin to notice it once the smoke isn't a regular part of your environment) but I also hate wanky bars where people aren't allowed to smoke - this isn't California, after all! Seriously, though - go for it. The only thing that will determine the outcome is your willpower. Patches etc. will help you break the association of the craving for nicotine with shoving a smoke in your gob, but you still need to ween yourself off the nicotine itself. Just think of the lovely cash that you can save... and then spend on beer to bugger up your liver instead of your lungs... |

Yah, but we live in good ol england where we are heavily taxed for everything. In greece I think it works out about £1 per pack as apposed to £4.40 over here. ..................

I think some people have more addictive personalities than others. I used to smoke a lot of weed and the occasional fag, but now i barely even smoke weed - just weekends really. I found it pretty easy really, a family member died in January of cancer (not through smoking though) and it does give you a different perspective, but even before then I could take the summer off (3 months) no problem. I'm not judging anybody who does smoke, but I think that a lot of people could give up if they REALLY wanted to. I think its definitely something you do for yourself, not because of pressure from family, friends or ad campaigns. Mind you a friend gave up after he came into my parents house & my mum just said "you stink" - it takes all sorts of things to make you quit! 2p done. |

Yeah, it's cheap - and you are bombarded with adverts everywhere as well... but on the other hand: CD's are the same price as in england - and in fact, there is less special offers on them... old habits die hard - I still have to buy some new music to get the fix - had to cut down since moving here - coz of my currently unstable money situation... I smoke rollies by the way - I find them more full of flavour... also seems like less chemicals... but maybe I'm just fooling myself.. Another 'good' thing about smoking - it kills hunger - when you are too lazy to make it to the fridge Haven't smoked weed for years now... more than three or so... just happens to be this way - kinda miss it... sex while stoned is amazing - anybody agree with that? 'They' say it's easier to quit smoking if you started later than 20 years old - I did... so maybe I have a chance... ...
