I once tested an alpha of a flash based forum designed by a member of kirupaForum - Powered by vBulletin (I can't remember who) and it was a pretty dull experience. It felt much like a regular PHP forum but slower.

There's only so many things you can do to a forum before it becomes user-unfriendly. Flash can't really add much without taking away from the accessibility side. PHP is the perfect language for it really.

Flash for the sake of flash is so fucking annoying. (I have to deal with it on a regular basis and it annoys the fuck out of me - working on reducing it though).

Movies, interactive/educational/entertaining animations, embedding sound, advertising - just a few of the good uses for Flash.

Distracting pointlessly flashy navigation and annoying transition effects are just a few of the reasons that Flash is annoying.

If you are participating in a forum you are there to read and write, not to look at the buttons on a site. If you click a link you want to get to the resulting page as soon as possible without looking at completely pointless transitions unnecessarily slowing your access.

^ I agree, but as annoying as Flash can be, it can also look awesome.
