Switch to AS3
Wondering how people feel about switching to AS3 and thus relying on Flash Player versions >= 9 for real world websites and applications. According to Adobe - Flash Player Version Penetration the difference in adaptation between versions 7 and 9 was still about 6% in September. Might be a bit of a threshold still. Yet I'm quite keen on switching my work flow to as3 and it should even bring some performance improvements. How do the flash guys around here think about this. Is it safe to use yet. (ow, and if you're coming in just to bash the overal use of flash: don't) |

agreed, the cases where this came to mind are a photographers portfolio and a band website. Both not really focused that much on full support of all users. I'm tending to use AS3 but feel like I need a confirmation from other actionscripters to settle my slight feeling of guilt here. |

i would make the switch, mostly because AS3 is many many times better than AS2 for so many reasons you probably already read about from real programmers and i won't list them here. but then, i do actually check the visitor analytics to make sure at least most of the site's users have >flash9 installed. still, i suggest only making the switch if it's necessary... necessary is large websites, web apps, etc. if all you need are timeline actions, links to pages, gotoAndStop()s, and stop()s, then stick with AS2, or AS1 even... you don't benefit all that much more from simply using flash9plugin over the older versions. |
