A .swf file is to a .fla file, what a .jpg file is to a .psd file.

In an easier-to-read summary: you'll either need some sort of .swf decompiler, or understand that you simply cannot edit a .swf... unless you also have the .fla that was used to create it.

there are a few ways to do this
swf is a compiled fla file you would need a decompiler to extract the object , the bad thing about this is after you decompile the naming scheme of all the files/layers is stripped and it is hard to determine what everything is.

Programs to decompile and convert swf:
sothinks SWF decompiler will convert most AS1&AS2 Swf files to a FLA
there are a few opensource options flasm/flare there command line and mostly extract actionscript from the files.

why can't you get access to the original .fla (are you trying to amend someone else's work without them knowing? now be honest)

if the swf is unprotected, you can still get it back into flash. although exporting it again is an entirely different matter.
