click and drag on an axis?!??!

is that even possible?!

like a record player arm. draggable over to the vinyl. when you click it lifts up.
but how would you restrain the cursor to only a certain arc. and how about dragging
an object that can only rotate?

i feel like a miserable failure...

i made a 3D interactive record player instead but i still want to figure this out!
you can check it out here...

(excuse the text at the bottom of the page i left the .fla at work)

hey dan do you think there's a way to turn the listen on only on the drag and not on the click?
because the drag works fine. but when you click on the arm it rotates it like 90 degrees each time.
which makes the whole thing look sloppy naturally.
here are links to the new swf and fla. i use flash 8 but i guess you use mx so i saved it in mx format...hopefully you can open it.lp_player.swf

yeah that's not really what you want...

for the trigonometry to work properly the needle movieclip has to be horizontal when its rotation is zero, so all I did was went into the needle_mc and rotated the graphics until they were horizontal, then went back to the main timeline and rotated the needle_mc back to where you had it originally.

hope that makes sense....

update

alright so i've got everything here for an interactive record player...just can't get the song to only play when the record arm is released above the ring on the record that corresponds to the song...it just plays when you release anywhere.

and i've added the zip.

aha! good job mate! you never cease to amaze. this lp player has been a helluva learning experience.
i've almost got it completely done...adding volume knobs and play/stop functions and also a drag and drop of which lp the user wants to listen to. when it's done i'll post it in here. what's your last name so i can thank you when i ever use it. and do you have a link to your own stuff?

no problem veni

if you could just put "thanks to dAN" and a link to my portfolio site www.squarebracket.net (currently "Coming Soon" - and has been for about 2 years) that'd be cool

it's looking good - feels nice when you drop the record on the platter it starts to spin

there's a problem with the mp3s - they sound like they're playing at the wrong speed (slooooowww) - it might be that they've been encoded at 48kHz, but they're playing back at 44kHz...

might be safer to re-encode them at 44kHz if you can

it's getting there!
